How to Combat Your Winter Blues: 7 Yoga Poses

December 22, 2015

Winter has a reputation for making us wanting to slow down, huddle inside our blankets and wait for the warmer weather to come about.  For some of us who are used to being active, this may not seem like an issue. But for the rest of us, we are affected by the change in weather. We have little motivation to do much when the brisk and cold weather hits, feeling discouraged and sluggish.  In any case, we can all use a little help getting up and be motivated.  That includes people who enjoy yoga.

There are some amazing and awesome yoga poses that are absolutely great for the cold and harsh winter. Not only can the daily practice of yoga during the winter help warming up the body, it can also improve the immune system. Loosen those stiff muscles and enjoy the winter months anyway you can.  A yoga pose that can help warming up our bodies on those cold days is called Sun Salutation. On the days you think you have no time or energy for yoga, try and do at least one or two rounds of the Sun Salutation. An added benefit to this pose is that it also helps combat the cold chill winter mornings can bring. Another great yoga pose to do this winter is the Warrior Pose, which can help opening up the airways. With the airways open, it will be well advised to use an essential oil to help boost the immune system, just in case any nasty illness gets inside those freshly opened lungs. Along with the Warrior Pose are the Fish Pose and the Lotus Pose. They all can help you feel better and breathe easier.

If you are looking for poses that help keep you limber and move easier, look no further than the Triangle Pose, Mountain Pose, Pigeon Pose, and the Seated Forward Pose. These four poses also help warm up and reduce back pain.

Now that you learn the winter yoga poses that can help boost the immune system and help you breathe easier, there are essential oils you can pair up with these poses. For this lovely winter season, we highly recommend you to try the Immunity Support blend created by Azendea. It consists of Grapefruit oil, Lemon oil, Orange oil and Rosemary oil. It comes in a travel size inhaler or roller that is convenient to carry, easy to use before and/or after your yoga sessions.  As a cautionary note, Rosemary may not be ideal for pregnant women or kids under 12. However,  it can be easily replaced with Eucalyptus or Peppermint oils, which are generally considered safe to use by all ages!
